OUR STORY
As the world population grows and prosperity increases, demand for protein sources is expected to grow rapidly over the next few decades. Right now, the supply of protein is unevenly distributed. There is overconsumption in rich Western countries, especially of animal protein, and malnutrition in many other parts of the world.
By adopting a balanced diet, featuring more plant-based products and plant-based ingredients, we as consumers can take major steps to reduce this imbalance and fight climate change.
MeelunieGPI aims to accelerate the transition to a sustainable food system in which everyone can access enough high-quality plant protein.
To do this, we are championing a crop long undervalued and overlooked by the food industry: the fava bean, also known as Vicia faba, broad bean, or faba bean. By utilizing the whole bean, we can create a number of valuable food ingredients.
Innovation
We use a unique technique that involves applying dairy technology to plant-based products. This ensures the gentle, aqueous fractionation of the fava beans into high-value ingredients tailored for specific markets.
By employing this clean technology, we make optimal use of natural resources without compromising on our main goal: to produce pure, highly functional ingredients.

We use the most sustainable production processes possible. Part of the water used in production is filtered and reused, creating a circular system. While any heat generated is captured for reuse in the local municipality’s heating system.
We strive to source all our fava beans regionally. Both to encourage a positive environmental impact through improved crop rotation and also to reduce farm-to-factory CO2 emissions.
Fava bean ingredients are not considered major allergens, making them especially attractive to food formulators looking for ‘free from’ ingredients.
At no stage in the production process have our ingredients been supplemented with ingredients or substances of animal origin.
